It's not just a part of his daily routine, it's who he is. It is his weakness and his strength. It is his happiness and his sadness. It is his courage and his faith. It is his fear and his bravery. It is his mind and his body. It is his heart and his soul. It is his motivation and his reason. He does it without hesitation. He does it without question. He does it for hope of a better way. He does it for those he loves. He does it for those he doesn't even know. He does it so others won't have to. If you look closely, you can see it in his eyes. He is a member of the United States Military, and it's his sacrifice that touches our hearts.
So many things today are taken for granted, the invitation to the birthday party of a friend, the invitation to a graduation or a baby shower, the ability to walk out of the house wearing whatever you want, speaking your mind where ever you want, voting for the next president, etc. These are all things that we just don't think about as issues of importance. What would you do if someone told you you'd never attend another birthday party? What would you do if someone told you, you'd miss the birth of your child? It would be devastating. But do you know what? That guy I mentioned earlier, he knows not to take these things for granted. He knows that if you love someone, you should tell them because there might not be a tomorrow for him. He has been in tears, beaten down and on the verge of defeat; he knows he will not live forever. He is overseas in a foxhole, he is stateside and lonely in his barracks room, he is flying a plane with no landing in sight, he is on the ocean praying for land, he is in the mind and hearts of those he loves and cares for.
As supporters, we understand the sacrifices he is willing to make. And when we were told he is leaving for Iraq, Afghanistan or being stationed in Okinawa for three years, without hesitation, we hug him, kiss him, tell him we love him and then watch him leave into the unknown. We are rested though in the assurance that he is a man of honor, dignity, courage, bravery, strength, faith, commitment, passion, dedication and compassion. We know that he is with others of the same characteristics. They are the best of the best, and they never leave a man behind. Though it is more than difficult at times, we get through it. Reading the papers, watching the news, chatting in support groups online, waiting, praying, wondering and worrying, it's all part of a normal day for us. Sadly, there isn't much we can do to bring him home. What we can do though is send him stuff, pray for him, and if you are in an intimate relationship with him, be faithful. We can stand up for him and defend him when people say he is wrong. We can protect him while he's off protecting us. We can rise the awareness of not only his needs while away from home, but of the needs of those with him. If he is strong enough to make it through this deployment, so are we.
The future is uncertain for everyone; anything could happen at any moment. He's willing to make sacrifices that most would not, and to him, that's just a part of his day. As stated earlier though, from a supporter point of view, it's not just part of his day, it's who he is, just look into his eyes. |
