Our country’s incredible continuing infatuation with celebrity clearly manifests itself, not only in the things we watch, do, and say, but, this borderline obsessive fascination incorporates our influence to dress in certain ways, as well. By the time these trends filter their way down to the lowest, most remote, backland, aspects of society, these trends, such as the wearing of military apparel, may have changed very little. The simplicity of military apparel, such as combat boots or battered fatiques, makes it an easy trend for anyone to incorporate wholly, or partially, into his or her own expanding fashion wardrobe.
With military service, and celebrities, being somewhat of a consistent duo of the past, even if contemporary celebrities do not serve in their nation’s Armed Forces, many of these current celebrities have been known to, at the very least, pay respect to the service of those who came before. Even still, this is not the only reason behind the emergence of military apparel as a full-blown fashion trend. As “metal” and hard rock bands, of the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, on into the current artists we see today, took the airwaves, as well as the stage, the need for a musical identity became an ever-present requirement in order to establish a connection, and, predominantly, become successful through the increased sale of their own music to the masses.
In an effort to appeal to their crowds of interest, hefty fan base, and generate a presence by appearing strong and in control, the application of military apparel into their never-ending ensembles was a clear alternative to many other ‘would-be’ fashion statements that could have been made. Military apparel clearly served its purpose as camouflage pants and combat boots gave these irate musicians a militant appearance that fans were more than happy to incorporate into their very own sense of fashion and style. After attending a concert, or watching the latest music video to hit Music Television (MTV), the combination of talent and military apparel made for a lethal combination that resulted in a much greater fan base, and more importantly, established interest in their musical products and abilities.
From the role of the musician, to that of the actor, the application of military apparel into war movies was, not only a no-brainer, but, essentially a requirement, given the nature of the film. When deemed as popular, and dispersed throughout society, after production by a major producer, or involvement of a famous actor, even movies that detail a certain facet of a real war have achieved great accomplishments. Not only have these DVDs become cherished parts of some American’s movie collections, but, each time they are watched, they are exposed to the military apparel that played such a huge role in supplying our servicemen, and women, throughout past wars and conflicts up into modern day military engagements. The role of American musicians, and actors alike, in establishing a presence of military apparel has dominated an ever-impressionable society whose interests rises and weans like the incoming tide, as it bombards a shoreline. |
